Current Trends And Opportunities For A Freelancer

Studies suggest that more and more people are interested in becoming freelancers. Some of them are tired of being confined in an inflexible working environment. Others are forced to be freelancers because of changes in their home situation like becoming stay-at-home moms. Before, when you hear the word “freelancer”, it’s deemed as something akin to being a bum and people shy away from being dubbed as one. But nowadays, with the Internet revolution, freelancing has become a very enviable lifestyle.

Just to differentiate freelancing from home-based work, freelancing is when you can work with any number of “partners” of your own choosing. Home-based work means you’re tied to one company that simply does not require you to go to work in order to be able to do your job. Home-based workers get the benefits of regular employees while freelancers are paid on a contractual basis.

Why do companies usually hire freelancers?

In some cases, a company needs some work done on short-term projects. Rather than hire new employees to handle the task and then not need them after would be a costly thing to do. So, they turn to freelancers for assistance. Once the job is done and the freelancers have been paid their fees, the company resumes its normal business.

This was the traditional way of doing business. It’s still being done but with the Internet revolution, the freelance business has certainly undergone its own changes. Freelancers are now the “business” and their expertise is on the market for the world to partake of. This is now the latest trend – freelancers establishing their own business for themselves. This is the lifestyle that they created - working on their own, they define their own flexible hours and nobody else to please and answer to except the client. They can actually get more work done because they don’t lose time on traveling to and from the office.

Who are these Entrepreneurial Freelancers?

These are the people who have broken their ties from their desk jobs and started a business on their own. They are now seen as highly-educated, multi-lingual experts that are capable of delivering their goods and services at the agreed time. Most of them are graphic designers, web developers, writers, cartoonists, accounting and marketing professionals who do not necessarily require a desk or an office space to do their job well. Just give them a computer, an Internet connection and the required software and their talents are just waiting to come out. They can even upgrade their skills by participating in seminars and trainings over the Internet.

How do they conduct their business?

With the advent of the Internet, the marketplace for their talents has simply expanded. Their portfolio can easily be viewed by prospective partners if they have built a website for themselves, which is usually the case. Other options include registering for membership at Freelancer websites such as rentacoder, scriptlance, and getafreelancer, where people looking for freelancers can immediately search for and contact a particular “expert” or they can just post their projects and wait for freelancers to bid on them. This is what happens when freelancers are still starting to make a name for themselves.

Usually, in these websites, there’s a rating system that reflects the kind of work that was done. The higher the rating that the freelancer gets, the better chances he has of getting more projects. When you’ve already made a mark (whether good or bad) on the industry that you belong to, word gets around quick and fast. So, it is a must that you give 100% in every project that comes your way.

With the breakthrough of “instant” communication via the Internet, negotiations and agreements over project details and payment are accomplished by e-mail, which thanks to legislation, is now considered legal and binding as well. Freelancers’ products and work outputs are easily transmitted to their partners and feedback can be relayed over a matter of seconds or minutes depending on their time differences. Payment options and transactions are made more efficient through electronic transfer and made even more secure by online verification software.

Because of all these new developments, freelancers may find themselves working for people across the country or even across the ocean. They key to success is in maintaining a high level of work ethic in the way that business is done. Partners will always appreciate if the goods are delivered on time, if project specifications are met, if the quality of work exceeds their expectations.

But also be on the lookout for scams and people who will try to take advantage of your position. Since, most transactions are done online, some projects even go as far as without personal contact, there may be one or two who will request for a project and then not deliver the agreed payment. The greatest satisfaction and fulfillment that freelancers can get is when they’ve exceeded their partners’ expectations and know for themselves that they’ve done a good job. Through this, they can expect more job opportunities to come their way.
